While New Zealand's rail services do not go to the major tourist destination such as Queenstown or the Bay of Islands, rail travel is still worth considering for the odd journey, as it is far more comfortable than a bus and the scenery is spectular.
The Tranz Scenic rail network connects major destinations in the North and South Islands operating eight long-distance train services throughout New Zealand, including:
| • | The Overlander (Auckland to Wellington) taking you through the central North Island's majestic scenery of native forests, ravines, gorges and volcanic peaks. |
| • | The TranzCoastal (Picton to Christchurch) that runs along the South Island's east coast between snow-capped mountains and rugged coastline. |
| • | The award-winning TranzAlpine (Christchurch to Greymouth) which winds its way through spectacular gorges and river valleys before crossing the snow-capped Southern Alps. |
The TranzAlpine service between Christchurch and Greymouth is considered one of the world's most scenic rail journeys and many people make this journey for the spectacular train trip.
In addition to trains operated by Tranz Rail, there are some small tourist-oriented rail services, the most useful of which is the Taieri Gorge Railway that runs from Dunedin to Middlemarch along the spectacular Taieri River Gorge with coach connections to Queenstown.
