In the late 18th century a treasure house of gold was first found in the streams and hills around Lake
Wakatipu, and like a magnet the discovery brought thousands to the area from all over the world.
They found a place as rich in natural splendour as it was in precious metals and set about trying to master the
elements in their quest for wealth.
The men & women of those hard-working, hard-living days are gone now, but the long-abandoned remains
of their lives & work have become as much a part of the region's history as the scenery they've blended into.

This full day walk in the ancient beech forest of the Mount Aspiring National Park starts with a scenic drive to the northern end of Lake Wakatipu and into the Routeburn Valley. The high snow capped mountains provide a magnificent backdrop for the walk up this beautiful river valley. The Flats is one of two pristine sites for lunch, as is the next stop, Routeburn Falls, a short stride through more alpine forest. You and your guide will decide which point suits you best. After enjoying the cascades of mountain water at the Falls, the walk continues to climb through a vast alpine meadow towards the Harris Saddle, some 1300 metres above sea level. High up in the clear mountain air a 360 degree view looks out along the Hollyford Valley to the Tasman Sea, and inland, offering the chance to see the difference altitude makes to vegetation on the side of each of the hundreds of mountains. Time chooses the point to turn and enjoy the experience in reverse, rediscovering the morning’s experiences and finding new enjoyment around each corner. Native and migratory birds welcome your return to the forest and a plentiful array of species will accompany your journey back to civilisation. Duration 9 hours. Walking time 3-5 hours approximately. Walking distance approx 16 km of well formed easy walking track (8kms each way). Departures by arrangement from all Queenstown accommodation, 8.00am (year round). Highlights: Spectacular snow-capped mountain and lake views

After an astonishing, 40-minute journey up the shores of Lake Wakatipu, with scenery to rival Hollywood’s finest round every bend, and an unobtrusive but fascinating commentary to match, you arrive in the backcountry head-of-the-lake township of Glenorchy. From there your mission is to penetrate the forests around the base of the backbone of New Zealand. The only way to master the shallow glacial waters of the Southern Alps, is by the Kiwi innovation that revolutionised high-country transport, the jet boat. Dart River Jet Boat Safari drivers know their river intimately and their superb skills behind the wheel complement frequent stops on this unique journey, to explain the geology and lore of the ancient and unspoiled lands you traverse. Two fascinating hours and 35km later, not to mention 150 metres higher, your guide leads you on a gentle ascent under a canopy of native beech forest, where birdsong supplies an unrivalled, natural soundtrack. The vast numbers of plant species compete for attention with the orchestra of native bird life and your guide will point out your new, inquisitive travelling companions as they stop by to look you over. After a delicious picnic lunch in a forest glade it’s on to the magical, forest-framed waters of Lake Sylvan. Nestled among a family of mountains, the lake’s brooding waters have a reddy-brown tint picked up from plants by its feeder streams on their journey down the hillsides over the 11,000 years of its existence. Winding back from the lake, the track ambles through to the Routeburn River, flowing down the very edge of the forest. A stout swing bridge carries you over the deep water far below, and on to your transport. From there it’s a short drive through rich farmland to Glenorchy where you might enjoy a brief refreshing stop in the local country pub, before the road trip back to Queenstown.. Duration 8 to 9.5 hours (optional). Walking time 2 to 3 hours (optional). Walking distance approx 4 to 9 kms (optional - easy to moderate) of unformed trails easy to moderate walking on leaves and moss. Departures by arrangement from Queenstown accommodation, 8.00am (September to May). Highlights: Spectacular snow-capped mountain and lake views
