Visit historic skippers canyon, shotover river gold panning, pipeline and AJ Hackett bungy. We also go to Macetown, Arrowtown and the film locations of the Lord of the Rings in a four wheel drive recreational vehicle.

4WD Experience

Practical tuition puts you in the driving seat to really find out what these machines can do.
With a trained instructors at your side you will get maximum enjoyment whilst learning valuable off-road driving skills in the comfort and safety of "The Best 4x4xFar".
Alternatively you can opt for a tagalong safari in your own vehicle. Travelling in tandem and in radio contact with your guide vehicle, you will learn how to negotiate rough terrain whilst on a challenging tour through New Zealand back country.

Macetown

A tortuous route originally negotiated on foot and by packhorse, today Macetown is only accessible by off-road vehicles wiht over 25 river crossings en route. The road winds from river level to high above the Arrow Gorge giving ever-changing views and great photo opportunities.
Macetown - Fact File:
Allow 4.5 hours return to Queenstown.
Trips depart 8:00am and 1:30pm (dependent upon road and river conditions).
Visit Arrow Gorge and Falls, Scoles Tunnel, Three Sisters, Macetown Historic Reserve. Spectacular off-road 4WD track. Refreshments and home baking included.

Safari of the Scenes

Nomad Safaris operate 4WD tours into the heart of New Zealand high country: the embodiment of the Middle-Earth of Tolkienšs imagination. The 'Safari of the Scenes' tour is a scenic charter that gives a spectacular look at the diversity of the scenery in the area. It is based around several of the specific sites where filming took place. These are real places; there are no film sets; they are areas of outstanding natural beauty that need no enhancement. Here it is possible to experience the magical atmosphere captured in the film.
Half Day Safari of the Scenes:
A ) - Wakatipu.
Departs 8.30am and 1.30pm. Allow 4 hours return to Qtn. Refreshments provided. Goldpanning at Ford of Bruinen. Misty mountains, Pillars of the Kings, Road to Mordor.
B ) - Glenorchy.
Departs 8.10am and 1.30pm. Allow 4 hours return to Qtn. Refreshments provided. Lothlorien, Isengard, Ithilien Camp, Amon Hen among others.

Skippers Canyon

Skippers Canyon Road was hacked by hand into the sheer cliff sides of the Shotover River Valley, following the discovery of gold in the Queenstown area in 1862. We follow Skippers Road, with every hairpin bend, across the historic suspension bridge, opened in 1901, to the old gold mining township of Skippers. This tour offers spectacular mountain scenery, rugged canyons, gold panning to gain a taste of NZ's pioneer mining history, and the excitement of the 4WD in a safe environment.

Trips depart 8:30am and 1:30pm (times may vary during winter).
Visit Heaven & Hells Gate, Maori Point, Lighthouse Rock and Blue Slip.
